We passed a dog that growled from mercy street
Whose spine was bent like an antique key
We passed poor kids watching teevee through the window of a store
Being watched through glass is even worse than being ignored
We passed the sunset like a body at a morgue being painted
The lost silver snake the sidewalk no one ever thought to name it
We passed a black umbrella of birds that caught the wind and flew away
We passed a puppet with invisible eyes who asked about our day
Under the shadow of the bell tower of the church of the sacred heart
Broken only by the last Christmas lights chirping in fits and starts
We passed toy villages and arias of moths sung by trains
We passed rose bushes of lovely ones no two petals ever the same
We passed a child with a book of matches looking at a cat’s tail like a fuse
And every time you’d say “did you see that?” and I’d look around confused

You say I never notice anything
You say life is passing me by
But that’s not really true
