20171108 - A Pretty Girl Like You

from The Song Diary II by Paleo

/

lyrics

On the patio of the Four Roses you ask me “How are you?”
like a sphinx who either always lies or always tells the truth,
with a silk worm of smoke wriggling out of the apple in your throat
before vanishing into a polkadot on the eternal trench coat
of the dark gray 1AM sky. So I say “I’m pretty okay,
you know, can’t complain or whatever. How about you? How was your day?”
But on the inside I want to by singing your name break every wine glass in your bar.
I want to gallop down the train tracks racing you to a hundred falling stars.

What’s a pretty girl like you doing talking to
a broken mess like me?

We are dressed in our past selves, like hot shower mist on mirrors.
We both got our dark marks that never come off but we still keep washing them in tears.
Here I am trying to walk on a rainbow again thinking it’s a bridge.
Why’s getting up gotta be so hard when falling down is always such a cinch?
More and more love’s getting to be an expensive room with no windows or doors.
But I still love living here. It’s not what you fight, it’s what you’re fighting for.
And I know that we don’t really know one another, and we’ve only spoken that one weird time.
And in the moonlike stillness after the train passed by, I tried on you that line:

What’s a pretty girl like you doing talking to
a broken mess like me?
What’s a pretty girl like you doing talking to
a broken mess like me?
