Photos of my father,
the frames inside my head,
the flowers in the graveyard,
the blooming on the dead.
Staring through my ceiling,
waiting for a single sleep,
but sleeps avoids the guilty
like facts avoid belief.
Photos of my father
dividing up his nest
to give most to his babies
and survive on what is left.
We who fly for miles to find
what our father found:
a gutter, roof, or vacant branch
to build a life around.
Inside the ghost of family,
we breath our living breath,
so the ghost can throw another fight,
and die another death.
You never see it coming,
his heart still in your chest,
buried in the attic,
asleep under the bed.
Candles on the river
drifting toward the sea,
we know they'll never make it,
but it's nice sometimes to dream.
