THE WATERBORN

Do not wait for the world to turn,
let her wait for you instead.
Forty times ten she will turn in one trip.
Let's die the second death on a birthbed.

Waterborn baby dragonfly,
passing tortoises passing by,
from shore to sea and sea to shore,
she named nymph the waterborn.

We mistook the books for birds for bats,
ugly alone but rather pretty in packs,
thoughts like eggs trafficked through bridges of ants,
terrific we make solid those things liquid and gas.

I remember the ocean.
Do you remember the ocean you were born in?

Cascading bats, stairy mouth of the chimney
sweeps clean the skies of the dragonflies.

I remember the ocean.

Me mystery teas aged in caves dark and dank and darker.
Charlottesville, love, lover, treat me
to a blanket of feathers, a blanket of veins.
Midwinter night terrors in the chimney of fame.

Do not wait for the world to turn,
let her wait for you instead.
Forty times ten she will turn in one trip.
Let's die the second death on a birthbed.

I remember the ocean.
Do you remember the ocean you were born in?
