OF ATHENS

Last night I stayed with the sister fates of Athens.
They put me up as breathless as the moon.
One sister old as Everest sings politely.
One sister young as acorns calls the tune.

The third will meet them halfway.
She and I will share a birthday.
Our two futures spool around one single spoon.

Forethought, who was the youngest, brought me olives,
and chicory to drink me out of bounds.
These will make you dream like you are falling,
but try to wake before you hit the ground.

Running low of reasons,
season after season,
we get lost to have a chance at being found.

Afterthought, the oldest, brought me whiskey,
and elder root to parachute the mind.
These will make you dream like you are flying,
but try to wake before you hit the sky.
Running high on reasons,
season upon season,
we never win or lose if we don't try.

Joy, the one my age, brings me a blanket,
her wisdom glitters endless as her eyes.
This will help you sleep soundly to morning.
We will see you on the other side of night.

Lucky we were born in the same year, I said.
Who knows where I'd be sleeping otherwise?

Luck don't call the shots, she said.
We deal The Odds Man out.
She smiled, and turned off the light.
