lyrics

THE GOLDEN DIAMOND

There once was a golden diamond
plated in the innocent souls
of those who peered in through its folds
to know what can't be known.

It's said it was carved by spirits.
It possessed a second sight.
Where Indian corn and spinach grow,
it just appeared one night.

The farmer's mistress found it.
She gasped when she saw inside.
The yellow sun. The spider star.
A vision black as night.

Just then the door began ringing.
The mistress drew it wide.
A treat, indeed!
And with ghostly speed,
she placed the trick inside.

When the little boy showed his mother,
the golden diamond shined.
His mother smiled,
but when she spied
the diamond's dire insides,
her heart went pumpkin white.
